URBAN NAMA COMPOST: Creating opportunities for municipalities to produce and operational solid waste management transformation

What the project is about?

Urban NAMA COMPOST project is designed to promote greater use of Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) and Urban Green Infrastructure (UGI) approaches in Ethiopian cities/towns to assist the Government of Ethiopia in achieving its objectives of its Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP II).

The project strengthens the regulatory and institutional coordination mechanisms to integrate ISWM and UGI within urban systems. It ensures financial sustainability of compost production and utilization through market-based system with micro and small enterprises (MSEs). The project aims to reduce emissions, increase resilience of urban areas to drought and flooding hazards, improve quality of life in urban areas, and increase employment opportunities for marginal income households in urban and periurban areas.

  • Enabling framework created and enforced to support ISWM and UGI;
  • Private sector value chain for compost created and professionalism promoted to support sustainable production and utilisation of compost
  • Architecture for Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMA) developed and implemented
  • Integration of UGI and ISWM in urban systems, including design and implementation in 6 cities and towns (Adama, Bahir Dar, Bishoftu, Dire Dawa, Hawassa and Mekelle).
