Ethiopia-Kenya cross border conference discusses sustainable peace

April 19, 2019

A two-day regional conference in Addis Ababa ended with strong calls for translating commitment from Ethiopia and Kenya authorities into social transformation to change the narrative of cross border communities.

The regional conference focused on the cross-border communities of Moyale following recent surge of violence in the area.

The event was organized as part of a wider cross border project that was launched in December 2015 bringing together Governments of Ethiopia and Kenya with co-funding by the European Union Emergency Trust Fund for Africa, as well as Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the United Nations in both countries.

Community representatives from both sides of the border engaged with government authorities and development partners to identify political, economic, legal and social drivers of conflict and vulnerability.

Participants called for investments in the area that could expand access to markets and social services including access to water and health care for both people and animals, stronger adherence to rule of law and accountability as well as better linkage to traditional institutions.
