UNDP partners with CARE Ethiopia for Gender learning

February 19, 2019

UNDP and CARE Ethiopia staff have met to share good practices on their organisation’s approaches to gender mainstreaming in their programmes and operations.

This engagement follows UNDP Ethiopia’s enrollment in the 2018/2019 UNDP Gender Equality Seal Certification which calls for the country office to deliver on transformational gender equality results.

The learning event highlighted the need to invest resources for gender analysis to inform programme design; bring onboard gender experts and introduce gender mainstreaming actions as well as gender standalone interventions.

"We need to be bold" said Kidanua Abera, UNDP Ethiopia's energy and low carbon development programme analyst,  said after the session stressing the need to "to set our vision and incorporate gender as our core business".

Following the experience sharing, UNDP will work on to improve the internal practices of the organization undertaking implementation and audit of policies and activities  related to gender such as work-life balance, female internship programs, female mentoring and leadership initiatives and promotion of competency-based recruitment to balance gender composition in the office.

UNDP Ethiopia’s gender equality strategy for 2018-2021 has identified priorities and entry points to mainstream gender throughout its three programme areas of Accelerating economic growth and poverty reduction; Climate change and resilience building; and Strengthening democratic governance and capacity development.

A multi-disciplinary gender focal team led by the UNDP Resident Representative is helping coordinate the monitoring and implementation of the office gender seal action plan.
