The International Day for Poverty Eradication commemorated at the Menelik First Primary Public School in Addis Ababa on October 19 2009. On the occasion, speeches were delivered by representatives of the UN, the Government, the civil society, and the children connected to the day: "End Poverty Now!"

Mr. Fidele Sarassoro, the Resident Coordinator of UN system in Ethiopia, addressed the statement of the UN General Secretary, Mr. Ban Ki-moon that emphasizes the need for global cooperation and immediacy in fighting poverty. Ato Assefa Ashengo, on behalf of the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs remarked that "ensuring and improving the social well being of citizens specifically children in difficult circumstances, people with disabilities, elderly, family and victims of other social problems is significant."

Ato Eshetu Bekele, Executive Director of the Poverty Action Network of Civil Society Organizations in Ethiopia said that “the Government, civic society organizations, donors in cooperation with the society need to  work together” to fulfill the Millennium Development Goals so that all stakeholders could created “mutual accountability working  environment.”
