The United Nations staff pledged to fight against poverty in Addis Ababa on October 16 2009

More than three hundred staff of all UN agencies in Ethiopia gathered at the ECA hall to show their commitment to the fight against extreme poverty and inequality on 16 October 2009. Further in their pledge, they firmly expressed that “leaders to honor their promises to meet the Millennium Development Goals.” The staff expressed their firm stand that they are not asking for charity “but for justice.”  Finally, they concluded their pledge in expressing the solidarity with people from other 100 countries to say: “No more Excuses – End Poverty Now”!

Before the pledge, Madam Lalla Ben Barka, Deputy Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa addressed the statement of the Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in reading. Mr. Fidele Sarassoro, the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Ethiopia, addressed the statement of the Administrator of UNDP, Helen Clark, on the commemoration of the poverty eradication day and the threat posed by the climate change against the poor.
