The Human Development Report of UNDP was launched on 5th October 2009 here in Addis Ababa

05 October 2009 -  Addis Ababa Hilton Hotel, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

The Human Development Report (HDR) 2009, flagship publication of the United Nations Development Programme was launched today in Addis Ababa in the presence of H.E. Ato Ahmed Shide, State Minister of Finance and Development, Mr. Fidele Sarassoro, the Resident Representative of UNDP Ethiopia and Ambassador Fesseha yimer, Special Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
In his speech, on behalf of the Minster of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Fisseha noted that the Report ”stresses that overcoming barriers fixes human development firmly on the agenda of policy makers who seek the best outcomes from increasingly complex patterns of movement of people worldwide.”
H.E. Ato Ahmend Shide, appreciated UNDP for its effort to share knowledge through its Human Development Report by raising many development issues over decades that have significantly contributed to policy dialogue and development. He further noted that “this year’s report on migration has opened the room for further policy debated by emphasizing the potential positive contribution of internal and international human mobility and migration and suggests removing barriers related to the free movements of human capital; against the conventional thinking of addressing brain drain issues.”
Mr. Fidele Sarassoro remarked that the Report demystified the notions regarding migration. He stressed that “research has found that migration can in certain circumstances, have negative effects on locally born workers with comparable skills, the body of evidence suggests that these effects are generally small and may, in some contexts, be entirely absent.”
Panel discussion was also held during the launching day that gave opportunity to share experiences and practices of different participants.
