Millennium Development Goals in Ethiopia

As indicated in the Plan for Accelerated and Sustained Development to End Poverty in Ethiopia (PASDEP), Ethiopia’s PRSP, the Government of Ethiopia is committed to poverty reduction and attainment of MDGs. Ethiopia launched its first PRSP, the Sustainable Development and Poverty Reduction Programme, in 2002 and produced the first MDG report on July 4, 2004.

To monitor and campaign for the MDGs at the country level, the Government of Ethiopia (GoE) and the UN Country Team embarked on a process of translating the goals into the local context. The report identified MDG targets that are consistent with Ethiopia's Poverty Reduction Strategy and other national development policies and strategies.

Ethiopia has also undertaken a MDG’ Needs Assessment which served as a basis for the formulation of a ten-year MDG Needs Assessment Strategy. PASDEP is full consistent with the MDG strategy and covers the first five years of the overall strategy duration. UNDP has played a lead role in supporting the Government to undertake the needs assessment and formulate  the MDG Strategy. Ethiopia is one of the few countries which have developed MDG-ized national development plans.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, UNDP is also planning to initiate the refinement of the MDG Needs Assessment and produce the second MDG Report this year. This exercise is particularly useful as it informs the formulation of the national development plan in 2010 for the period covering the second five years of the MDG Strategy. The refinement of the MDG Needs Assessment is particularly useful, as it helps to look at the targets and resource requirement to achieve the MDGs in Ethiopia. It will also take into consideration recent developments regarding the methodologies for undertaking MDGs needs assessments worldwide.

In terms of advocacy for achievement of MDGs, UNDP has provided and continues to provide support to the Government and other stakeholders in terms of popularizing MDGs through publication of advocacy materials such as flyers, brochures, etc in English as well as in some local languages.
