Environment and Sustainable Development

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)'s goal in the area of environment and sustainable development is to strengthen national capacity to manage the environment in a sustainable manner while ensuring adequate protection of the poor.

Specific results UNDP aims to achieve are to:

  • mainstream environmental and energy issues into development planning;
  • mobilize finance for improved environmental management;
  • address increasing threats from climate change; and
  • build local capacity to better manage the environment and deliver services, especially water and energy.

UNDP Ethiopia has designed a programme for Food Security and Recovery in which environment and natural resource management is an integral part. Within the component of environment and natural resource management component, the programme aims to build national capacity to:

  • implement federal/regional environmental policy strategies, laws and action plans enhanced;
  • implement the water sector development programme enhanced; and
  • ensure environmental convention obligations compliance.
