Crisis Prevention and Recovery

The United Nations Development Porgramme (UNDP) assists countries that are prone to natural disasters or face imminent conflict and have experienced severe disruptions in critical national or local capacities. UNDP also supports countries that have been designated by the Security Council or Peacebuilding Commission as having a priority post-conflict situation. Countries are requesting international support such as developing national and local capacities to manage risks, assess needs, and plan, lead, and coordinate recovery. Gender empowerment will be given special emphasis throughout all UNDP activities in crisis-affected countries. The UNDP's Eight Point Agenda for Women's Empowerment and Gender Equality in Crisis Prevention and Recovery will guide the activities within this area.

In Ethiopia, UNDP's work in this area is an integral part of the Food Security and Recovery Programme.

Disaster Risk Reduction, Recovery and Livelihoods programme.

The programme's expected results include the implementation of policies, strategies and coordination mechanisms which ensures effective disaster risk management, early recovery and clear and effective linkages between humanitarian assistance and development activities. In addition, UNDP supports the Ethiopian Mine Action Office in its operations in Tigray, Afar and Somali regions, delivering significant socio-economic benefits for those regions and facilitating free movement, food security and agricultural development as well as consolidation of peace and security.
