Democratic Governance

As the lead UN agency for promoting good governance, UNDP in Ethiopia aims to contribute towards the achievement of Millenium Declaration princples and deepening democracy in the country through a number of programmes and projects which support capacity development of key democratic institutions, such as Parliament, National Human Rights Commission, National Elections Board, Federal Anti-Curruption Units and civil service system at all levels.

These programmes and projects are implemented within the context of the UN-wide Good Governance Programme as stipulated in the UNDAF which emphasize the principles of promoting good governance that are underscored in the PASDEP.The areas where UNDP's support is provided include:

  • Support to justice sector reform and promotion of human rights;
  • Support to promotion of decentralization and local (woreda-level) governance;
  • Support to capacity development of federal parliaments, regional state councils and electoral bodies;
  • Support to capacity development in managing electoral processes; and
  • Support to capacity development of MoFED and BoFEDs to ensure efficient allocation and utilization of resources and support of a harmonized approach to addressing development challenges through managing the Development Assistance Group (DAG) pooled fund.
