The International Day of Poverty Eradication Commemorated

The International Day for Poverty Eradication (IDPE) and the “Stand Up Take Action” moment were commemorated by the United Nations Country Team in Ethiopia together with   community members, government representatives, and the civic society on October 17th in Addis Ababa. On this occasion, about 400 people and representatives of teachers association , people living with HIV/AIDS, youth groups, persons with disabilities , representative of women groups , and representative of the government contributed speeches related to the poverty eradication efforts on going in Ethiopia.

In his opening speech, Mr. Bjorn Ljungqvist, County Representative of UNICEF Ethiopia, remarked that the “fight against poverty is, above all, a moral imperative. While we are experiencing global economic growth and prosperity, the majority of the world population is unable to meet their very basic needs. The international community has acknowledged that poverty is a violation of human rights and that promoting human rights can reduce poverty.”

On the occasion of the IDPE,  the Secretary General of UN and the Administrator of UNDP, Kemal Dervis, sent their respective messages too.
