UN Volunteers in Brief Created by the UN General Assembly in 1970 and administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Volunteers programme (UNV) is the UN organization that supports sustainable human development globally through the promotion of volunteerism, including the mobilization of volunteers. It operates amidst growing international recognition that volunteerism brings benefits to both society at large and the individual volunteer; that it makes important contributions, economically as well as socially; and that it contributes to more cohesive societies by building trust and reciprocity among citizens. Through the concept of volunteerism and volunteer action, the causes of peace and development are being served by providing opportunities for participation of all people. UN Volunteers are involved in and support the programmes of the United Nations itself and almost all United Nations funds, programmes and specialized agencies in areas such as:
Some 5,000 UN Volunteers -- two-thirds of them from developing countries -- serve annually in over 150 countries. UNV coordinates the United Nations Information Technology Service (UNITeS) and manages the online volunteering facility hosted on the Netaid.org website.
Ethiopia Program The UNV programme in Ethiopia started as far back as in 1970 as part of the poverty reduction strategies of UNDP under the multi-lateral cooperation framework. The UNV programme, comprising international and national UN Volunteers scheme has contributed significantly to the development process of Ethiopia. The National UNV Scheme was launched in September 2003, for the first time in Ethiopia. The scheme has made significant contributions in filling the critical capacity gaps in support of the development process especially at the Woreda and Kebele levels. Over 120 NUNVs are currently placed with Federal Ministries and Regional Bureaus in Addis Ababa, Oromia, SNNPR, Somali, Afar, Beneshangul, Tigray and Amhara. The National UN Volunteers scheme and the systematic utilisation of the UNVs have provided critical technical support for enhanced delivery of services in support of the development process at grassroots level.
