A number of significant aspects of the UN Country Team (UNCT) in Ethiopia constitute both challenges and opportunities: First, it is the largest UN Country Team in Africa with 25 members. Second, a number of Agency Heads also perform regional and sub-regional responsibilities, including liaison to the African Union. Third, the composition of the Team reflects a diverse and rich array of mandates, including those that are highly operational as well as those that undertake liaison activities. In support of the Government's development priorities, the UN System is involved in a variety of activities. It has provided strategic support to important national processes, such as the Plan for Accelerated and Sustainable Development to End Poverty (PASDEP), the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD), as well as projects and programmes. The latter include: development projects and programmes in agriculture, industry, education, environment, health, food security, recovery, humanitarian and emergency relief activities, capacity building and governance-related activities (civil service reform and parliament).
