Remarks - Handover of equipment to the Government Communication Affairs Office

Dec 19, 2014

Remarks by UNDP Resident Representative Mr. Eugene Owusu

H.E. State Minister Ewnetu Bilata, Government Communication Affairs Office

UNDP’s strategic partnership with the Government Communication Affairs Office seeks to help government’s efforts to connect with the energies of the Ethiopian people. Strategic communication is the currency of development today.

UNDP’s partnership is couched within its broader programme to capacitate institutions of the State with more capable systems, leadership skills, strategic communication, cutting edge thinking on emerging development issues and strategic negotiation skills.

UNDP’s support to the Government Communication Affairs Office is part of our broader support to the entire media industry. The UN sees the Ethiopian media as a vital partner in telling Ethiopia’s development story and communicating development results. Each year includes more and more success stories. The oversubscription of the Ethiopia’s first sovereign bond is a testament to this success.

We look forward to continue supporting the media’s efforts to establish a media council, backed by a robust code of conduct. We will also be developing a comprehensive media capacity building programme for the coming years as Ethiopia joins the rest of the world in going from monitoring the Millennium Development Goals to rolling out the Sustainable Development Goals.

UNDP is very keen to support efforts to create and strengthen platforms that enhance the dialogue between the media and government.

As Ethiopia prepares for elections this year it is critically important that support is provided to capacitate and engage all sectors of the society. This is why we are providing these resources to the GCAO, to support the government’s efforts to scale up its communication and dialogue channels with citizens.
