“Sustainability and Equity: A Better Future for All” – Launch of HDR 2011

Nov 11, 2011

The 2011 Human Development Report under the theme “Sustainability and Equity: A Better Future for All” will be launched in Ethiopia on Thursday 3rd November 2011 in collaboration with the Addis Ababa University.

The 2011 Human Development Report calls for new approaches to global human development and environmental sustainability. The report argues that sustainable utilization of environmental and natural resources is critical to long-term and equitable human development.

The report also projects that although living standards in most countries have been rising and converging for several decades, a disturbing reversal of those trends could occur if environmental deterioration and social inequalities continue to intensify, with the least developed countries diverging from global patterns of progress by 2050.

UNDP has been commissioning the editorially independent Human Development Report since 1990 when the Human Development Index (HDI) — a composite measure of health, education and income — helped track human development progress across countries using measurements that embrace economic and social dimensions of development.
