UNDP-Japan renew their commitment to support Ethiopia Peace Support Training Centre

UNDP signed a USD 500,000 project to continue its support to the Ethiopia Peace Support Training Centre (EPSTC) with the financial support of the Government of Japan. 

The newly signed fund will be used to primarily strengthen the institutional and human capacity of the centre for provision of training, transfer of skills and expertise to future peacekeeping practitioners.

UNDP-Japan support to the Peace Support Training Center help to strengthen peacekeeping operations in the Horn of Africa and the rest of the continent by addressing critical training gaps on peacebuilding, conflict prevention, post conflict recovery and conflict management and resolution.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Ambassador of Japan Mr. Shinichi Saida, commended Ethiopia for playing a pivotal role in building the capacity of the regional standby experts for peacekeeping and peace-building missions.  

The center since its establishment in 2013 trained 187 peacekeeping practitioners from Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Egypt, Somalia, Djibouti, South Sudan, Sudan, Mali, Cameroon, Central Republic of Africa, and Liberia.

UNDP Country Director, Ms. Louise Chamberlain, said that more work needs to be done to integrate more female experts in the regional and global peacekeeping missions. She reiterated, “gender parity and enhancing the role of women in peacekeeping missions is essential for sustainable peace and security.”

Ethiopia is the top contributor of peacekeepers in Africa and the UN peacekeeping force. Moreover, the country is currently a leading contributor of female peacekeepers to UN missions.
