Election Board Recieves New Facility

The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) has received and made operational a brand new RAPIDA offset printing machine for its election materials printing purchased at a cost of EURO 464,463.21.

The handover and inaugural ceremony took place in the presence of H.E Professor Mega Bekana, Chair of the Board, Mr. Eugene Owusu, UNDP Resident Representative, UN Resident Coordinator & UN Humanitarian Coordinator as well as members from the donor’s community at the NEBE’s printing house in Addis Ababa.

Professor Merga Bekana noted that, “This machine will not only increase our capacity but it will also build our internal confidence to exactly exercise our independent and impartial work,” adding, “It will ensure the secrecy of the standard national election and universal suffrage.”

Mr. Eugene Owusu on his part reflected that, “When it comes to elections, more often than not, the emphasis tends to be on the Election Day. People do take for granted the energies and the processes that go into how can elections be prepared. It is in this respect that we as partners are delighted that NEBE has this internal capacity to support the preparation of such materials.” He also said, “This investment that is made certainly by the government and by development partners is to strengthen election administration and we need to continue to strengthen these processes. That is the motivation for us as partners.”

The Democratic Institutions Programme (DIP) is a five-year multi-donor program to strengthen the capacity of seven key democratic institutions. These key institutions are 1) House of Peoples Representatives (HoPR) and Regional State Councils 2) The House of Federation and Souther n Nations and Nationalities Peoples Regional State (SNNPRS) Council of Nationalities 3) The Ethiopian Institute of the Ombudsman 5) The Federal Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (FEACC) 6) The Office of the Federal Auditor General and Regional Auditors Generals (OAG) and 7) The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE). The total resource allocated for the Programme is more than million 48 USD.
