United Nations Volunteers have participated in a tree planting campaign in Hawassa, the capital of the Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s Region (SNNPR). The aim of the campaign was to support the regional government’s on-going efforts to raise general public’s awareness on community action towards greener surroundings.

United Nations Volunteers likewise organized a half-day workshop, with the Office of the President of the SNNPR, to scale up efforts to establish a Volunteers Green Park in Hawassa town. The stakeholders, including Ato Anesa Melko, Special Advisor to the Regional President and Ato Biru Wolede, Hawassa City Municipality General Manager, exhibited high level of commitment towards the initiative. The establishment of the park strengthens community and regional government initiatives to green Hawassa, and its surroundings, and also presents an opportunity to devise other initiatives that can help the city and region maintain a green environment.
