Coping with Drought and Climate Change

What is the project about

Coping with Drought & Climate Change project (CWDCC) is one of the four Global Environment Facility (GEF) medium size projects being implemented in Kenya, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia financed by the GEF Climate Change Adaptation Fund.

A key component of the initiative includes ensuring that participating countries and communities can share their drought and climate change experiences with one another, with the ultimate hope of achieving some kind of sustainable and transformational change in the face of the ongoing and worsening effects of climate change. The project was initiated to promote experience-sharing between communities and countries in an effort to cope better with drought and climate change and achieve transformational change within the four African countries.

With a population of 85 million, Ethiopia is Africa’s second most populous nation after Nigeria, and more than 85 percent of Ethiopians depend heavily on the country’s environmental resources for their livelihoods.

The CWD &CC project in Ethiopia is being executed in Kalu Woreda , Amhara Region in the north of Ethiopia.

What have we accomplished so far

The project is  empowering local communities to take charge of their crop-cycle planning with the introduction of easy-to-use early warning systems that can predict the rainy season.

Now in its third year, the UNDP /GEF project in Ethiopia initially planned on reaching 41,000 inhabitants of the selected pilot areas in northern Ethiopia. However, the number of people benefiting has risen to 100,000 with neighboring communities– eager to learn from these new practices that will allow farmers to plan ahead in the face of an increasingly unpredictable climate.
